We at TOP-ArtistsDirectory aim to feature different artists in their various categories once a month where possible.

For the Month of May, we put up a poll for best, less well known (to dA) General Digital Artist and Best Fantasy Digital Artist.

The winner for General Digital was agios :iconagios:

It should be noted that whilst artists are not necessarily well known in dA, they may well be very well known in other circles.

Biography of Angelos Agiostratiti

Beginnings and Overview

I have been doing art since I was a child, but I'm working in the computer graphics field for about 15 years now. I initially started working as a graphic artist. However, I was drawn by the multimedia industry, which allows me to use several techniques and software, animation, as well as sound, and hence I was able to create more integrated pieces.  With the advent of the internet revolution, I soon gained my first global distinction –2nd place worldwide web animation award– by Macromedia. During these years, I have worked as a designer, illustrator, multimedia developer, animator, web artist and finally as an art director in several Greek multimedia and design companies.

There were two women who supported me the most in a very difficult period of my life and at the right time they pushed me in the art field – my mother and my wife.

There is generally an artistic family tradition, but in other domains. My brother is a musician (drummer) and my wife also a musician, she plays the piano… but I would say that there is an artistic influence all around.

I have several studies and formal training in designing, digital processing and in programs like Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator etc. So I can say that I have studies in the graphic design field.

As far as painting is concerned, I am a self-taught artist and I use mostly my soul, passion and fantasy to create what I have in mind.

I am a professional artist (if we can consider art as a profession).

Influences and Sources of Inspiration

I have been influenced by many artists, both contemporary and classic ones, but nobody in particular.

My sources of inspiration come from such things as, something that I will see outside the window, a dream I had, a word or phrase or a whole text that I will read in a book or a newspaper, a movie, a song, frequently music, social problems and tragedies that happen all over the world every day… Generally, I think that it depends on my mood and I have my senses in vigilance to receive messages.

I try not to place myself in one category of art. Art is always over the top. I just try to paint through my soul... I often close my eyes and try to see images projected in my mind; if the final result has a little piece of your sentiments and the viewers feel them, that's a success.

Techniques and Software used

I use different techniques. Sometimes I mix textures and colours, so as to try to make a coloured canvas that will give me some basic shapes and values of the artwork. Of course firstly I have the idea in my mind…

Other times I sketch in paper and then scan the prototype and start adding colour and values in Photoshop…

Other times I sketch digitally in Painter and give my first perspectives and values to the piece…

I usually have 7 or 8 files in high resolution of several steps of the progress, so if I change my mind I can go back and take another decision.

I use Photoshop, Painter, Illustrator, Poser a little bit…

Three Favourites and Why

Tree of wisdom by agios  "Tree of wisdom", one of my early artworks awarded by CGTalk Society, my first award. I remember myself painting for hours. I didn't know how I would paint all these nature elements, but I finally did. Moreover, I love the duality of composition between "good" and "bad", difficult colours all in one composition and the mirroring of the elements.

LOVEBIRDS by agios  "Lovebirds" is a colourful piece, several times awarded and a daily deviation in DA. I love the complexity of the background and the colours selection – it's too vibrant. I love the message as well: the lovebirds that they found their paradise but lost their love. Many hours of painting and experiments with different colour variations until…

The Illusionist by agios  "The Illusionist" was a challenge to try to combine magic with colours, dreaming with concept and finally mix many different elements like the silken mantillas transform to tigers and the playing cards that transform to birds etc… I think that it was a very inspirational piece, with many difficulties that I overcame.

Advice for Aspiring Artists

I would advise them to have patience with art. They all want to create miracles at once, but actually they have to try step by step to improve their art, to observe the art of famous artists, to get some references and to read tutorials. Finally, they must try to be themselves and nobody else and keep having faith in their mind and soul and keep working hard.

Now and the Future

I am very happy and satisfied with my artwork at this point. However, I would never say no to an interesting or a challenging project... Plus no one ever knows what can happen in the future!

Besides my official site The Art of Angelos Agiostratiti, there is another artistic site that I have created trying to promote Greek artists. It's a Greek artists' database artAZ running art news from all over the world.

The aim of TAD is to enable people looking for some of the best artists on dA to easily acquaint themselves with those listed so far. As stated elsewhere, this list is by no means complete, and is constantly expanding. We are happy to receive suggestions and the Team of TAD will follow these up as quickly as the member's time limits permit. It should also be noted that TOP-ArtistsDirectory's listings do not necessarily reflect the opinions of dA in general, but we do hope that many will find our service helpful, particularly if you have just joined this community.
